The state of Michigan announced Thursday it will pay $600 million to settle a suit with Flint residents affected by lead-tainted drinking water in the predominately African American city.

The agreement was reached after 18 months of negotiations with lawyers representing thousands of city residents, NBC News reported.

The major class-action lawsuit filed in 2015 on behalf of the residents against then-Gov. Rick Snyder, the city of Flint and city officials who were involved in deciding to switch to the Flint River as its water source.
