A nonprofit organization that caters to people struggling with addiction, mental health challenges, homelessness and incarceration has acquired the site of the Discount Place home goods store in D.C.’s Anacostia area with plans to redevelop the property as a mixed-use project.

Recovery Café DC acquired the 1337 Good Hope Road SE property where the store has operated since 1997 for $2.5 million, Feldman Ruel Urban Property Advisors managing principal Ian Ruel told Bisnow.

“While this was a difficult transaction to navigate, we were lucky to be working with great people on both sides of the transaction,” Ruel said, Bisnow reported. “Recovery Café DC and Anacostia Economic Development Corp. have an incredible plan for this site that will benefit the community by bringing its much-needed services, as well as more affordable housing to the neighborhood.”

Plans for the property, located two blocks from the intersection of Good Hope Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, call for the inclusion of 36 units of affordable housing and space for an additional Recovery Café DC. The organization already operates a cafe on Minnesota Avenue in Southeast.

Groundbreaking for the project is expected to begin within the next nine to 12 months.
