Nearly 72,000 coronavirus cases were reported in children and teenagers last week, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
The academy said 71,726 new cases among youths were reported from July 22-29, a “substantial” increase from the week before and five times as many as at the end of June, CNN reported.
Roughly 4.2 million youths have tested positive for the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic, making up about 19% of all reported cases, CNN reported.
However, severe illness from the virus is a rarity for children, who have made up between 1.3% to 3.5% of coronavirus-related hospitalizations from state to state, the academy said.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 526 deaths among those 17 or younger, with seven states yet to report a child death from COVID-19, according to CNN.
