The overwhelming majority of Americans are still vulnerable to catching the coronavirus, a medical expert said Friday.

โ€œThe fundamental biology of this disease hasnโ€™t changed,โ€ Dr. Ali Khan, dean of the College of Public Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, said Friday on CNNโ€™s โ€œNew Day.โ€ โ€œOver 90 percent are still susceptible. This is still a significant disease and 30 percent of Americans are at high risk.โ€

Khan said recent spikes in cases seen in states such as Florida and Texas will continue if reopenings arenโ€™t handled more carefully.

โ€œWeโ€™re in the midst of the greatest public health failure in American history, and if weโ€™re going to continue to open up and not open up safely, weโ€™re going to continue to see increased cases,โ€ he said.
