(USA Today) – NBC Nightly News retained its ratings lead last week with a substitute anchor despite the turmoil surrounding the news operation and its star newsman, new data from Nielsen show.

NBC Nightly News tallied 9.4 million viewers in the first week of broadcast under anchor Lester Holt, who replaced Brian Williams while Williams is on a 6-month suspension for fabricating his reporting tour in Iraq in 2003.

ABC World News Tonight with David Muir registered 9 million viewers and claimed Wednesday that it has “slashed its year-to-year gaps with NBC Nightly News across all key target (demographics).”

CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley had 7.6 million viewers.
