An opportunity to shape economic vitality has just opened up for residents, businesses, and stakeholders in Prince George’s County, Maryland, thanks to the spring launch of the Neighborhood Planning Academy.
With applications open through Jan. 31, the free, seven-week program — offered by the Prince George’s County Planning Department of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) — provides community-minded individuals with the essential tools to scale visionsfromactioninto progress, particularly with a pulse on driving betterment in the area.
“Past participants have introduced some amazing ideas and suggestions to help improve our communities and elevate our county,” said Darryl Barnes, chairman of the M-NCPPC Prince George’s Planning Board in a press release. “I am excited about how the Neighborhood Planning Academy is transforming Prince George’s County, educating residents, and empowering community advocates.”
From residents and business leaders to municipalities and nonprofit organizations, applicants will be selected from each council district to learn the essentials of urban planning, community engagement, and sustainable development.
While leveraging a boost in confidence and the skills that aid planning and decision-making, the unique program acts as a guidepost to understand the intricacies of the development process and how to champion local causes – a benefit that exceeds the seven weeks of service.

“This award-winning program helps to promote environmental sustainability, design excellence, and quality development, while encouraging healthy lifestyles in Prince George’s County neighborhoods,” said James Hunt, acting director of the M-NCPPC Prince George’s County Planning Department.
Beginning March 4, the spring session is set to run on Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. The April 15 finale will feature an in-person graduation and capstone project presentations to highlight newly acquired skills and planning knowledge.
For the growing pot of changemakers opting to shape Prince George’s, Hunt expressed both pride and anticipation.
“We are proud of the 250 alumni who are active in their communities,” Hunt said, “and look forward to welcoming the new cohort.”
The first six sessions will be conducted virtually via Microsoft Teams. Applications are open through Jan. 31.
