The Search for Answers in Nolan Wells’ Death Enters a New Phase

Nearly a month after Nolan Wells was found dead off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, investigators have completed the state’s autopsy, prosecutors are preparing to present evidence to a grand jury, attorneys on both sides are positioning for possible civil litigation, and state officials are warning the public about fake documents circulating online.

Yet one question remains unanswered.

What happened during the final hours before the 18-year-old disappeared on Horn Island?

A newly completed independent analytical review of photographs, videos, GPS coordinates, and witness accounts concludes that the available evidence still leaves a “material gap” in the timeline between Wells’ last independently corroborated sighting and the reported departure of the boat that transported him to the island. The 22-page report stresses that it reaches no conclusion about criminal or civil responsibility and instead identifies evidence investigators may still need to resolve unanswered questions. 

That uncertainty remains even as the official investigation continues.

The Mississippi State Medical Examiner has completed the official autopsy, but the findings will not be released publicly. Instead, they will be submitted directly to a Jackson County grand jury along with other investigative evidence. District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath has said that presenting death investigations to the grand jury before releasing findings is standard practice in her office. 

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said his legal team continues to pursue its own investigation. He said forensic audio specialists are reviewing the complete Sea Tow emergency call from July 4 while ocean engineering experts are examining how Wells’ body ultimately came to be recovered near the northwestern tip of Horn Island.

“We want to know how is that possible with the oceanic tides,” Crump said. “You’ve got low tides and high tides … so it’s not adding up.” 

Attorney Eric Hertz said discussions also continue regarding a joint forensic examination of cell phones connected to the case; an inspection he expects would include the FBI if it proceeds. Meanwhile, forensic pathologist Dr. Roger Mitchell continues reviewing evidence gathered during the family’s independent examination after previously determining that the cause and manner of death remained undetermined pending additional investigation. 

The analytical report raises similar concerns about missing information.

According to the review, GPS coordinates used during search operations closely match independently supplied mapping data. Multiple photographs consistently depict the same cluster of boats, and social media videos provide additional reference points during the afternoon of July 4. However, the report concludes those materials alone cannot establish exactly what occurred during the critical period before Wells disappeared. It also cautions that vessel labels contained in the photographs are source annotations rather than independently verified identifications. 

The report further concludes that timestamps appearing in social media screen recordings cannot be accepted as definitive evidence without access to the original files and associated metadata. It also says the available materials do not independently verify the reported time that Wells’ transportation boat departed Horn Island. 

Rather than drawing conclusions, the report lists unanswered questions investigators may still need to resolve, including authenticated video metadata, vessel GPS records, complete occupant lists, additional witness statements, and confirmation of when various boats changed position that afternoon. 

Outside the investigation itself, the case has become increasingly contentious.

Three friends who were with Wells before he disappeared have become the focus of a GiveSendGo fundraiser that has raised more than $90,000 for anticipated legal expenses. The fundraising campaign says Warren Hudson, Jax Pitalo and Morgan Seymour have been “wrongly blamed” online and seeks money to defend against potential wrongful death litigation while pursuing possible defamation claims. The three men have maintained they cooperated fully with investigators. 

Crump has dismissed the prospect of competing lawsuits as a distraction, while Wells’ mother, Christine Wonsley, said she intends to continue pressing for answers.

“I am asking for answers; that is it, that is all,” she said in a recent social media video. 

‘Nolan’s Family, Friends, and … Nolan Himself, Deserve Better’

State officials have also found themselves confronting misinformation.

Mississippi Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell warned Sunday that a purported toxicology report circulating on social media is fraudulent and urged the public not to spread it.

“The purported toxicology report from Nolan Wells circulating through social media on various outlets is fraudulent,” Tindell wrote. “Nolan’s family, friends, and most importantly, Nolan himself, deserve better.”

Officials emphasized that no official toxicology report has been released and urged the public to rely only on verified information from investigators while the case remains active. 

Public attention has not diminished.

Hundreds of miles from Mississippi, members of the New Orleans community gathered for a second-line procession to honor Wells and call for justice. Organizer Reuben Evans said the event was intended both to celebrate Wells’ life and remind his family they were not alone.

“We’re not afraid to question. We want answers,” Evans said. “We just want the Wells family to know — we are behind y’all.”
