The coronavirus pandemic in the United States doesnโ€™t appear to be subsiding in the near future, a medical expert warned.

โ€œI think this is more like a forest fire,โ€ Michael Osterholm, head of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, said Sunday on NBCโ€™s โ€œMeet the Press.โ€ โ€œI think that wherever thereโ€™s wood to burn, this fireโ€™s going to burn, and right now we have a lot of susceptible people.

โ€œRight now, I donโ€™t see this slowing down through the summer or into the fall,โ€ Osterholm said. โ€œI donโ€™t think weโ€™re going to see one, two and three waves. I think weโ€™re going to just see one very, very difficult forest fire of cases.โ€

The U.S. currently has roughly 2.3 million confirmed coronavirus cases, with more than 120,000 deaths, according to a Johns Hopkins University tracker.
