People younger than 20 are about half as susceptible to the coronavirus as the rest of the population, according to a study published Tuesday by the journal Nature Medicine.

The research team, headed by Nicholas Davies and Rosalind Eggo at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, found that clinical symptoms appear in about 21 percent of 10-to-19-year-olds, but in about 69 percent in people 70 and older, CNN reported.

The researchers said children could be less susceptible to transmission from contact with an infected person and experience less severe complications from the virus.

Inversely, the researchers say that regions with “relatively older populations” could see disproportionate numbers of coronavirus cases without effective containment measures in place, especially in the pandemic’s later stages.
