Pepco is highlighting progress and partnerships that have strengthened reliability, affordability and community resilience for the 944,000 customers it serves across the District and Maryland as parent company Exelon celebrates its 25th anniversary.
The anniversary underscores how customers benefit from Exelon’s scale through shared best practices, coordinated storm response and sustained investments in modernizing the grid. Last week, Exelon rang the opening bell at the Nasdaq MarketSite to commemorate the milestone.
Exelon President and CEO Calvin Butler was joined at the ceremony by members of Exelon’s Executive Committee, including Tyler Anthony, president and CEO of Pepco Holdings.
“Being part of the Exelon family of companies for nearly a decade has empowered us to deliver record service for our customers while deepening our commitment to the communities we serve,” Anthony said. “As we celebrate Exelon’s 25-year anniversary, we’re proud to reaffirm our dedication to building stronger, more resilient communities โ whether through modernizing the grid to ensure reliable service or investing in programs that uplift families and create opportunities for individuals across the District and Maryland.”
Investments in the local energy grid, innovative technologies and dedicated employees have provided Pepco customers across the District and Maryland with record reliability, according to the company. Over the last decade, customers have experienced a 57% decrease in outages.
In 2024, Pepco helped more than 42,000 customers secure more than $39 million in energy assistance. This summer, Pepco launched its Customer Relief Fund, which provides up to $300 in direct energy assistance to limited- and moderate-income customers. The fund was made possible by a one-time $5 million donation by Exelon to the Salvation Army.
Pepco’s Maryland customers have access to energy efficiency programs that have produced 41 million kilowatt-hours in energy savings and more than $4.3 billion in savings on customers’ bills since the program’s inception in 2009, according to the company.
Pepco, Exelon and the Exelon Foundation-funded Community Impact Capital Fund has provided more than $4.6 million in grant and equity funding to five local, minority-owned businesses working in the energy, IT, workforce development and real estate fields. Businesses are using the funds to create jobs, grow their companies and reinvest in their neighborhoods and communities. The fund was created to expand access to capital for businesses in historically disenfranchised or socioeconomically disadvantaged communities in Exelon’s service areas, including the District and Maryland.
Since 2016, Pepco has contributed more than $32 million to local nonprofits, and employees have devoted more than 85,500 hours to volunteering โ the equivalent of more than 10,600 workdays โ with hundreds of organizations across Maryland and the District, according to the company.
Pepco and Exelon, in partnership with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and the District Department of Employment Services, launched the District of Columbia Infrastructure Academy in 2017 to provide residents with career opportunities in energy and infrastructure. Since its launch, nearly 300 residents have graduated from the Pepco Utility Training School at the academy. The company’s partnership with Public Sector Solutions Group also supports training in critical cybersecurity and IT programs for residents across Maryland and the District.
