Pepco Providing 1,150 Free Trees to Customers

Pepco is providing 1,150 free trees to its residential customers through the Energy-Saving Trees program, which helps customers conserve energy and reduce household energy bills through strategic tree planting.

Starting this week, customers can reserve one free tree per household by calling 1-855-670-2771 or visiting www.arborday.org/pepco. Customers should have their Pepco account number handy when ordering the free tree.

“We are enthusiastic about the Energy-Saving Trees program and its goals to benefit the environment and help beautify our communities,” said Donna Cooper, Pepco region president. “We encourage our customers to plant the trees with family and friends to share in the experience and increase awareness about the energy-saving benefits of trees.”

The one-gallon, four-foot potted tree will be delivered directly to customers while supplies last. Available tree species include: eastern redbud, northern red oak, crape myrtle, river birch and red maple.

Shade trees can reduce residential cooling costs by as much as 20 percent, while in the winter months trees reduce wind speeds and infiltration of cold air into homes, thereby reducing heating costs, Pepco officials said.

The Arbor Day Foundation calculates that the 1,150 trees are estimated to produce nearly $250,000 in energy savings within 20 years.

Customers should call 811 to have utility-owned underground lines marked before digging.
