A Prince George’s County council member and planning board chairman will host a summit on Oct. 18 examining three decades of progress and challenges facing Black America since the Million Man March.
Council member Calvin Hawkins, D-At Large, and Planning Board Chairman Darryl Barnes will convene the event from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fairmont Heights High School auditorium in Landover. The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and nonprofit TJC Inc. are partnering on the summit.
The program will feature three panel discussions: a Black public officials roundtable, a Black media and entertainment roundtable and a Black business roundtable. Morning radio host Todd B. will emcee.
Organizers said the summit will assess the Black community’s trajectory since the 1995 march, particularly in the Washington region, and chart future directions.
“The Million Man March in 1995 was a historic gathering to emphasize the need to empower change within the Black community, particularly Black men, through atonement and activism,” Hawkins said. “While we’ve seen progress in the past 30 years, too many of the same challenges persist.”
He cited ongoing concerns including the federal government shutdown’s impact, rising living costs, academic achievement gaps and youth public safety issues that disproportionately affect Black communities.
“We must aggressively and proactively address these challenges with an ambitious agenda for moving forward,” Hawkins said.
Barnes said community leaders and residents must work together on solutions.
“Through our big dreams, unified vision, collective voices and strategic actions, we can develop new approaches to fulfill the promise of the original march and create a future where our communities thrive and flourish,” he said.
