S.C. Senate Votes to Remove Confederate Flag

COLUMBIA, S.C. (USA Today) — The South Carolina Senate has given key approval to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of the Statehouse.

The Senate voted 37-3 to approve the measure on a third reading Monday afternoon. Under Senate rules, it must pass by a two-thirds majority again in a vote that will take place Tuesday.

State lawmakers began debate Monday on the fate of the Confederate battle flag, less than three weeks after a deadly shooting at a predominantly black church brought renewed attention to the controversial Southern symbol.
