The Safeway Foundation and Safeway are gearing up for the fifth annual “School Spirit” fundraising campaign to benefit more than 100 schools in the D.C. region.
Throughout the month of August, Mid-Atlantic Division stores will collect customer donations at checkout to support school projects and supplies, with each store collecting donations on behalf of one local school, according to the Safeway Foundation.
“Safeway believes every student should have access to an education that prepares them to succeed in school and in life,” said Jim Perkins, Safeway Mid-Atlantic Division president. “We are pleased to once again support our local schools.”
Over the first four years, Safeway Foundation’s School Spirit campaigns have raised nearly $1.4 million on behalf of close to 300 schools.
The campaign will kick off at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday with a pep rally in Baltimore with former Baltimore Ravens player Adalius Thomas, team cheerleaders, and mascot Poe at the Canton Safeway pep rally at 2610 Boston Street. Special guests will also include WBAL-TV anchors Mindy Basara and Jason Newton, 98 Rock morning show host Justin Schlagel, and WBAL NewsRadio morning show anchor Bryan Nehman. Live music will be performed by the Marching Ravens Pep Band.
The following day in D.C. at 10:30 a.m., Washington Football Team legend Gary Clark will greet fans at the Capitol Hill Safeway pep rally at 415 14th Street SE. He will be joined by personalities from WTTG-TV (Channel 5), Washington Informer Publisher Denise Rolark Barnes and El Tiempo Latino’s Marcos Marin. Principal Dean Weeks of Maya Angelou Charter School will also participate. The Crush Funk Brass Band will provide live musical entertainment.
All events are free and open to the public.
Partners supporting the 2021 School Spirit campaign include the Washington Football Team and the Baltimore Ravens, Washington’s FOX 5 DC, Baltimore’s WBAL-TV 11, D.C. radio stations El Zol 107.9 FM and WPGC 95.5 FM, Baltimore radio stations 98 Rock and WBAL NewsRadio, The Washington Informer, El Tiempo Latino.
