The Terrell, a short-term housing site in Ward 1, is the latest family shelter to open in the District.

This achievement marks another milestone in Mayor Muriel Bowser’s strategic plan to end homelessness and close the time-worn D.C. General Hospital in favor of citywide short-term family housing programs, the mayor’s office said. Families are expected to begin moving into the Terrell next month.

The Terrell, named for D.C. civil rights activist Mary Church Terrell, was constructed through the oversight of DGS and includes 35 apartment-style units as well as 15 permanent supportive housing units for seniors.

Families will have access to service-enriched programming that will assist them to stabilize and exit homelessness, the mayor’s office said.
