DC Central Kitchen has expanded its “SNAP Match” incentive program to boost access to fresh produce in neighborhoods with limited grocery options.

The revamped program now provides $5 in additional fruits and vegetables when SNAP recipients purchase just one produce item at participating corner stores, regardless of price.

“This programmatic change comes at a crucial time, as inflationary pressures continue and safety net programs brace for potential cuts,” said DC Central Kitchen CEO Mike Curtin.

The program previously required customers to spend at least $5 to receive the benefit. Now available at 34 corner stores citywide, the initiative aims to reach thousands more residents facing food insecurity.

Last year, 22,000 DC SNAP customers purchased items through Healthy Corners, which has partnered with DC Health since 2013.

“By eliminating the $5 minimum and focusing on a single produce item to earn the incentive, we hope to reach thousands more customers,” Curtin said.

Store owner Habtom Haile, who operates two participating locations in Ward 8, has seen the program’s impact firsthand.

“Customers are struggling with inflation, but if they know they can get free food, they’re happy to use it,” he said.

DC Health Director Dr. Ayanna Bennett emphasized the program’s public health benefits: “Expanding access to fresh, healthy food is essential to improving health outcomes in our communities.”

The SNAP Match incentives have received support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program since 2018.
