โ€œBody Safety Zones Activity and Coloring Bookโ€ serves as a publication that Maryland social worker and therapeutic consultant Terri Johnson has long wanted to publish.

โ€œItโ€™s been a book that Iโ€™ve been writing in my heart for about 30 years,โ€ Johnson said. โ€œWhen I was young, I started noticing violations of young people, including myself, in terms of not feeling like my body belonged to me.โ€

She said she became protective of her younger siblings and cousins, and later offered counsel to many who suffered sexual abuse as children.

According to the anti-sexual violence organization RAINN, child sexual abuse counts as an international public health crisis. In the U.S., child protective service agencies substantiate or find evidence for a claim of sexual abuse every nine minutes, RAINN officials said.

Johnsonโ€™s book follows a school social worker and students discussing the four โ€œbody safety zonesโ€ โ€“ mouth, chest, private parts, and bottom. The characters also share ways to tell adults โ€œnoโ€ if theyโ€™re made to feel uncomfortable and also suggest that boys should also speak up.

โ€œSometimes, a person who touches children will tell them lies or things that are not true, such as โ€ฆ โ€˜This is a secret, so donโ€™t tell anyone.โ€™ Donโ€™t trust them, friends, tell a trusted adult,โ€ Johnson writes in the book.

โ€œI have had a lot of clients in my private practice share with me the devastation of sexual abuse,โ€ Johnson recalled.

โ€œMy spirit was unsettled. Children are my favorite people and sexual abuse is a pandemic that is silent and ignored. It was hard for me to get people to spread the word about this book. Itโ€™s just a tool to start the conversation.โ€

The Morgan State and University of Maryland graduate said thereโ€™s a lot of information available to the public about child sexual abuse. However, Johnson pushes prevention over intervention.

โ€œYou have to prevent child sex abuse and the devastation that comes with it,โ€ Johnson said. โ€œItโ€™s a violation of not just your body, but your soul. There is a lot of anxiety, depression, relationship issues, sexual health issues and identification issues like โ€˜Who am I,โ€™ and โ€œWhere do I fit.โ€™ Thereโ€™s a lot of uncertainty.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m a proponent of prevention, so what better way to empower little people than with information and let them know that adults have to respect their bodies?โ€

At 32 pages, the book includes a glossary of terms and a resource page featuring child advocacy organizations.

โ€œIn the book, I didnโ€™t name actual body parts. Thatโ€™s why itโ€™s โ€˜zone,โ€™โ€ Johnson said.

โ€œBut in the back of the book, thereโ€™s a glossary that encourages parents to give the proper name because thatโ€™s how predators capitalize โ€“ by giving a private area a different name and normalizing it. Knowing the correct names empowers children. I want to leave parents with a plethora of resources, so they can further educate themselves to see how devastating this can be for children,โ€ she said.

Johnson spent the summer and fall teaching body safety zones to classes at the Arena Playerโ€™s Theater in Baltimore.

The book pays homage to the school and Johnsonโ€™s great grandmother, Rhoda Lee Jones, who raised her and inspired her passion for children.

โ€œI asked the kids if they want to be a body safety advocate or ambassador,โ€ Johnson noted.

โ€œI shared with them that when you speak up and see something thatโ€™s not right, thatโ€™s being an advocate. An ambassador is spreading the word and teaching others about body safety zones. Many of the kindergarteners and pre-kindergartners said they want to be ambassadors. They get it,โ€ she said.

A portion of the bookโ€™s proceeds will benefit a book scholarship in Johnsonโ€™s great grandmotherโ€™s name and child organizations that work toward the prevention of child sexual abuse.
