A new coronavirus variant discovered in South Africa is even more of a threat than the highly infectious strain in the U.K., Britain’s health secretary warned Monday.
“I’m incredibly worried about the South Africa variant, and that’s why we took the action that we did to restrict all flights from South Africa,” British Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Matt Hancock said on BBC radio, the New York Post reported. “This is a very, very significant problem … and it’s even more of a problem than the U.K. variant.”
Though only two cases of the South African variant have been verified in the U.K., Hancock told ITV News that it seemed even easier to transmit than the U.K. strain, the Post reported.
“We’ve got to keep an eagle eye on this one because it is even harder to deal with than the U.K. variant,” he said, the Post reported.
