Black K-12 students are struggling with math and reading proficiency, and are falling behind their white peers, with 9 in 10 Black eighth-graders not proficient in math and 85% of Black fourth-graders not reading at grade level, according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s 2025 Kids Count Data Book.
