Nationwide, Redistricting Process Raises the Stakes for Racial Electoral Power

by Sam P.K. Collins February 2, 2022February 2, 2022

Gerrymandering, the process by which state officials redraw district boundaries to dilute racial and interest groups’ political power, has grown in popularity as the strategy of choice.

Maryland Del. Mark Fisher (R-Calvert County) speaks against a new legislative redistricting map during a session in the House chamber in Annapolis on Jan. 27. Fisher said the map would separate his new legislative district by the Patuxent River with no bridge, which would cause some drivers to travel at least 35 minutes from one side of the district to the other.
