Kevin Sumlin, the hottest first-year coach last season, could have been in the NFL with the Eagles or even at Auburn this season instead of Texas A&M.

The Web site, TexAgs.com first reported that the Eagles offered their head-coaching job to Sumlin after Chip Kelly initially turned down the offer. Philadelphia also had Penn Stateโ€™s Bill Oโ€™Brien, Notre Dameโ€™s Brian Kelly and others on their list.

Sumlin acknowledged to the San Antonio Express-News that heโ€™d heard from the NFL, but didnโ€™t specify which team or when.

โ€œEverybody knows what I do (now),โ€Sumlin told the Express-News. โ€œIโ€™ve never coached in the NFL. Iโ€™ve had plenty of opportunities to do that, both as an assistant coach and even as a head coach. But thereโ€™s a reason I coach college football, and weโ€™ve got a lot of work to do here. Weโ€™re still playing catch-up, and we finished third in the SEC West last year.
