Kevin Sumlin, the hottest first-year coach last season, could have been in the NFL with the Eagles or even at Auburn this season instead of Texas A&M.
The Web site, TexAgs.com first reported that the Eagles offered their head-coaching job to Sumlin after Chip Kelly initially turned down the offer. Philadelphia also had Penn Stateโs Bill OโBrien, Notre Dameโs Brian Kelly and others on their list.
Sumlin acknowledged to the San Antonio Express-News that heโd heard from the NFL, but didnโt specify which team or when.
โEverybody knows what I do (now),โSumlin told the Express-News. โIโve never coached in the NFL. Iโve had plenty of opportunities to do that, both as an assistant coach and even as a head coach. But thereโs a reason I coach college football, and weโve got a lot of work to do here. Weโre still playing catch-up, and we finished third in the SEC West last year.
