U.S. 2021 COVID Deaths Surpass 2020 Toll

Coronavirus-related deaths so far this year have exceeded 2020’s total, according to a Johns Hopkins University tracker.

The tracker reported virus-related deaths passed 704,000 on Tuesday. The 2020 tally was 352,000, or about half of Tuesday’s number.

The grim milestone comes as coronavirus cases, deaths and hospitalizations in the U.S. are headed downward according to data from the tracker, USA Today reported. In contrast to four weeks ago, hospitalizations have declined 26.9% and the number of intensive care units that have coronavirus patients have fallen by 25.3%.

On Tuesday, the Washington National Cathedral tolled its funeral bell 700 times in memory of those who perished due to the coronavirus.
