The U.S. had more than 50,000 reported coronavirus cases Wednesday — the first time the daily total has surpassed that number, according to a Johns Hopkins University tracker.

Johns Hopkins put the total number of confirmed cases in the U.S. at 2,686,480, up more than 50,700 from Tuesday, NPR reported.

The number of coronavirus-related deaths in the U.S. is currently more than 128,000, accounting for nearly a quarter of the global death toll, according to the tracker.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert and member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, told a Senate committee Wednesday the United States could soon reach 100,000 new cases daily.
