The extra $600 in weekly unemployment benefits provided during the coronavirus pandemic officially expires at 11:59 p.m. Friday, with congressional leaders and the White House far apart on a new stimulus package.
Despite the lack of action, the Senate has already adjourned for the weekend. The House announced Friday that it will delay its traditional August recess until a deal is struck, but lawmakers and the Trump administration aren’t close to an agreement, however.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows are scheduled to speak with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) by phone Friday and during the weekend, but no in-person meetings are planned, CNN reported.
