VA Coronavirus Cases Hit 60K; Death Rate Nearly Twice as High as National Average

The Department of Veterans Affairs now has more than 60,000 coronavirus cases, with more than half recorded since mid-July.

The department has had 60,278 cases since the outset of the pandemic in March, Military Times reported Monday.

VA officials have seen an increase in active cases over the past two weeks, reporting 3,258 across 139 individual sites, the Times reported.

As of Monday, at least 3,377 patients in the VA system have died from coronavirus-related complications, the Times reported. The death rate among VA patients is 5.6 percent, nearly double the 2.9 percent rate nationwide.

The United States currently has more than 7.1 million coronavirus cases, including nearly 205,000 related deaths, according to a Johns Hopkins University tracker.
