Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe visited Richmond Thursday to tour Sassy Jones Jewelry, a Black-owned small business, and announce his Lifting Black Virginians agenda thatโs built around his intentions for a second term in office.
McAuliffe, who was joined Thursday by Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney and Delegate Delores McQuinn, said that in his second bid to lead the state, he will continue to โdefend civil rights, ensure equitable access to quality health care and a world-class education, and create opportunities for Black Virginians to build wealth by increasing access to homeownership and investing in Black-owned banks and businesses.โ
As Virginiaโs 72nd governor from 2014-18, he took aggressive action to fight discrimination and worked together with Stoney, who served in McAuliffeโs cabinet as secretary of the Commonwealth, to deliver for Black Virginians, McAuliffeโs office said in a statement.
Since launching his campaign in December, McAuliffe has released big, bold plans to strengthen Virginiaโs education system and dramatically increase teacher pay, help secure Virginiaโs economic recovery from COVID-19, and reform the stateโs criminal justice system to create a more equitable Virginia, along with several other initiatives.
