Virginia has reported its first case of the new omicron variant of the coronavirus.

The detected sample was from an adult in the northwest region of the state who hadn’t ever left the U.S. but did travel within the U.S. during the exposure period, the state health department announced Thursday.

“We knew it was only a matter of time before we would record our first omicron infection in the commonwealth,” Dr. Norman Oliver, the state health commissioner, said in a statement, WTOP reported.

The omicron variant was first identified in Botswana and South Africa last month. Public health officials say it is too early to make a comprehensive diagnosis on the impact of the omicron but has noted so far that its symptoms are mild.

The variant has been discovered in 21 states, including neighboring Maryland, which reported three cases last week.

D.C. has yet to report an omicron infection.
