Coronavirus-related hospitalizations are increasing in Virginia, with 1,357 patients recorded by its health department Thursday.

Northern Virginia accounts for 243 of those, close to the region’s low of 183, InsideNoVa reported.

The state’s eastern region, undergoing a surge in cases since late June has 554 patients, the most since the pandemic started and the southwest region has 174, also a new benchmark.

The health department reported 911 new cases Thursday, with 174 in Northern Virginia, while the eastern region had the state’s most with 354, despite its seven-day average declining a bit from its peak, InsideNoVa reported. The department also reported 16 new coronavirus-related deaths, though just one was in Northern Virginia.

Overall, Virginia has reported 2,141 deaths with slightly less than half, 1,029 in Northern Virginia and nearly a quarter, 519, in Fairfax County.
