Virginia on Wednesday reported more than 1,000 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, surpassing that daily total for the first time since late April.
The state logged 1,087 cases, while its positivity rate sits at 4.7% after falling as low as 1.3% late last month, according to health department data.
Seven related deaths were also reported Wednesday, bringing Virginiaโs overall toll since the start of the pandemic to 11,522.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday reversed its masking guidelines to recommend vaccinated people in areas of โsubstantialโ coronavirus transmission resume wearing face coverings indoors. A large portion of Virginia would qualify as such an area, including Richmond, Petersburg and Chesterfield, Henrico and Hanover counties, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.
As of Wednesday, roughly 54% of the stateโs total population, or about 4.6 million people, has been fully vaccinated, according to health department data.
