With fans roaring loudly for both teams in the stands, the Washington Commanders defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 36-33, at Northwest Stadium, in a thrilling division rematch on Sunday, Dec. 22.
Despite having five turnovers, including three fumbles, and Philadelphia leading in scoring up until the fourth quarter, Washington managed to come out on top, advancing to 10-5. This Commanders win set off an alarm in the NFC East division, as the Eagles, the No. 1 team in the conference, dropped to 12-3.
As the franchise’s story turns to a new page, the Commanders continue to make history, having now won 10 games in a season for the first time since 2020.
Further, head coach Dan Quinn made franchise history as the only coach in their first year to win 10-plus games.
“Just what a wild game,” said Quinn. “Honestly, in the first quarter, we dug ourselves a huge hole. And one thing about our team that I really admire, we’re never out of the fight.
Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels finished the day as Washington’s leading passer and rusher. He completed 24 of 39 of his passes for 258 yards, five touchdowns, and two receptions for a 99.1 quarterback rating. Daniels is the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to throw for five touchdowns and rush for 65+ yards in a game.
“It’s special, you know, what he is able to do and his composure,” said linebacker Bobby Wagner, about Daniels. “We joke around a lot but his maturity to be able to have that composure is just amazing.”
In addition, wide receiver Jamison Crowder made a stunning appearance on his stat sheet, scoring a nine-yard touchdown pass from Daniels with six seconds left in the fourth quarter, and then solidifying the team’s win with a two-point conversion.
On Sunday, Dec. 29, the Commanders go against the Atlanta Falcons in a prime-time game at 8:20 p.m. For the Commanders, a win against the Falcons will help the team inch closer to clinching a spot in the NFL playoffs.
