Washington Gas is proud to join our neighbors in the nation’s capital and communities across the country in celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.

This historic milestone is an opportunity to honor the vision, courage, and sacrifice that has shaped our nation, while also looking ahead to the next chapter of American progress and innovation.

As our country commemorates 250 years of independence this year, we are honored to have been part of that story for 178 years.

Here for the DMV Since 1848

In 1848, just four days after the cornerstone was laid for the Washington Monument, Washington Gas Light Company received its charter from Congress. Among the new companyโ€™s earliest achievements was providing gas lighting in the House and Senate chambers, the White House, and along Pennsylvania Avenue. What began as a small utility helping illuminate a few key buildings and thoroughfares quickly became an essential part of daily life in Washington. Later, in the early part of the 20th century, Washington Gas expanded its service into Maryland and Virginia, laying the foundation for the regional energy network that serves customers today.

Since those early days, Washington Gas has evolved alongside the communities we serve. From supporting periods of rapid growth and technological advancement to helping meet the changing energy needs of homes, businesses, and institutions, we have remained focused on delivering affordable, reliable, and safe energy.

Today, Washington Gas serves more than 1.2 million customers across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. We continue to provide energy to some of the nation’s most recognizable landmarks, including the U.S. Capitol, the White House, and the John F. Kennedy Eternal Flame at Arlington National Cemetery. These enduring connections to our nation’s past and present reflect the vital role energy plays in daily life, and we are proud to help power the places that have shaped the American story for generations.

Our Unwavering Commitment to Customers

While the technology, infrastructure, and energy needs of our region have changed dramatically over the past 178 years, our commitment to customers remains as strong as ever. We are continually investing in the safety, reliability, and resilience of our system while working to meet the evolving needs of the communities we serve.

From lighting some of the first gas lamps on Capitol Hill to serving more than 1.2 million customers today, Washington Gas has been proud to help power the growth and success of the region we call home. As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, we look forward to continuing that tradition and being Here for the DMV for generations to come.
