Weekly Toll for New COVID Cases Hits Global High: WHO

A record 5,236,922 new coronavirus cases were added globally over the past seven days, according to World Health Organization data published Tuesday.

The new record topped the previous mark of 5.04 million, set the week of Jan. 4, CNN reported.

Cases increased in all WHO regions except for Europe, which had a 3% decline.

The largest increase was in the southeast Asia region, where case count numbers increased over 57% over the preceding week. India accounted for 94% of the region’s new infections, CNN reported.

The worldwide death toll hit 3 million in the past week. WHO said it took nine months for the world to hit its first one million coronavirus deaths but only three months to go from 2 million to 3 million, CNN reported.
