Gunfire shattered the White House Correspondentsโ Association (WHCA) dinner at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night, sending hundreds of journalists, elected officials, and guests diving under tables as Secret Service agents rushed President Donald Trump and other administration officials out of the ballroom.
What began as a routine evening quickly turned into chaos. Attendees described a series of loud pops that forced people to drop to the floor and take cover as security teams moved in.
โThe Washington Association of Black Journalists is extremely grateful that no one who attended the dinner was physically harmed,โ the Washington Association of Black Journalists (WABJ) wrote in a statement. โWe condemn any form of political violence, as this event is meant to honor and recognize the importance of a free press.โ
Law enforcement officials said a suspect armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and knives charged a Secret Service checkpoint inside the hotel before being stopped and taken into custody. A Secret Service officer was struck but protected by a ballistic vest and later released from the hospital.
Preliminary findings indicate the suspect was targeting members of the Trump administration, with officials saying the president was likely among those targets.
The incident happened at around 8:35 p.m., with Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior officials evacuated as guests remained on the ground until the room was secured.
The event itself is often misunderstood. The WHCA dinner is not a White House event. It is organized, hosted, and controlled entirely by the White House Correspondentsโ Association and held at a private venue, the Washington Hilton. The president attends only as an invited guest and plays no role in planning, menu decisions, or the selection of the location.
That distinction became critical as claims quickly surfaced in the hours after the shooting. Trump asserted that the incident showed the need for a new ballroom at the White House, suggesting such a facility would have prevented what occurred.
Those statements, echoed by allies and media personalities including Megyn Kelly, fueled online speculation, including unfounded claims that the shooting was staged. There is no evidence yet to support those claims. Law enforcement accounts and eyewitness reporting confirm that a suspect breached security at the hotel, exchanged gunfire with officers, and was subdued. Some initial reporting, including by TMZ, said the suspect was dead. However, video and still photos show the man handcuffed, and completely unharmed.
The facts surrounding the event remain unchanged. The shooting took place at a privately organized dinner held at a hotel. The White House does not run the event, does not control the venue, and does not determine where it is held.
Authorities identified the suspect as a 31-year-old man from California and said he acted alone. He is expected to face federal charges, including assault on a federal officer and weapons-related offenses, with additional charges possible as the investigation continues.
โThe violence and chaos in America must end,โ declared House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser praised law enforcement for its swift action.
โIโm so very thankful to members of law enforcement who did their jobs, and made sure all guests were safe,โ Bowser stated, noting that there was no immediate reason to believe anyone apart from the gunman was involved in the attack.
Meanwhile, D.C. Council member Robert White was forced to delete a social media post and apologized after the incident and referring to the emergency juvenile curfew authorized by Bowser to address recent teen takeovers in parts of D.C. โLooks like we need a curfew on the Correspondents Dinner,โ White posted on X shortly after the incident. โItโs clear we need to hold the parents responsible.โ
White later changed course and deleted the post.
โIโve deleted an earlier tweet,โ he wrote. โIt was inappropriate and insensitive. I should not have tried to make a point by referring to an incident of gun violence.โ
Several members of WABJ were present for the dinner when the gunfire erupted and immediately, according to association.
โBold, courageous journalism is the bedrock of a free society,โ WABJ wrote. โWe honor members of WABJ and the press, for showing up every day to do this crucial work in spite of the many threats to our safety and well-being.โ
