Thousands of residents, advocates and allies are expected to gather Saturday at Anacostia Park for Whitman-Walker’s 39th annual Walk & 5K to End HIV, one of the District’s largest community fundraising events.
The event, running from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., aims to raise critical funds for HIV prevention, care and education programs while bringing together communities most affected by the epidemic. Whitman-Walker, a leader in LGBTQ+ health care and HIV services, has hosted the signature fundraiser for nearly four decades.
In Washington, 2% of adults are known to be living with HIV, with many more remaining undiagnosed. Young people ages 13-24 account for nearly 20% of new HIV diagnoses, according to health data.
The walk serves as more than a fundraiser, organizers say. Proceeds directly support Whitman-Walker’s comprehensive health care services, ensuring access regardless of income, race, gender identity or HIV status. The funds also advance HIV prevention through tools like PrEP and PEP medications, support long-term survivors and expand access to care, particularly for young people and residents in Wards 7 and 8.
For the fourth consecutive year, the event will be held east of the Anacostia River at Anacostia Park, a location chosen to stand in solidarity with communities most impacted by the HIV epidemic.
The morning will feature a community warm-up, music, entertainment and a stage program highlighting local leaders, advocates and stories of hope. Free shuttle service from Anacostia Metro will be provided by Anacostia BID’s “Art to Go-Go” shuttle.
Participants who donate or raise $35 qualify for the signature T-shirt. Registered runners receive a T-shirt and timed running bib with their registration.
