The National Basketball Association (NBA) announced that the Washington Wizards secured the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft on Sunday, May 10.
This marks the fifth time in franchise history that Washington will select first overall and first since 2010, when the team selected John Wall. What made this moment even more special for the franchise was the fact that Wall represented the Wizards on stage at this year’s Draft Lottery in Chicago.
“Today is another encouraging day for Wizards fans and our entire organization,” said Monumental Basketball President Michael Winger. “To choose first among this inspiring group of athletes is a welcomed opportunity, and challenge, for our group. We look forward to adding another high-performing young player to our ascending team.”
Washington earned the lottery with a 14.0% chance of landing the top selection and moved into the No. 1 spot once the draft order was revealed.
This selection gives the Wizards a franchise-changing opportunity to add another elite young talent to their developing roster. Having a pick like this could accelerate the team’s rebuild alongside veterans Trae Young and Anthony Davis, making the chances greater of a bright future for the franchise.
“You gotta give a lot of credit to the front office and what they’ve been doing,” said Wizards legend Wall. “They did a great job by getting Trae Young and [Anthony Davis] during the trade deadline. And the young guys are doing a great job of developing and getting better for themselves.”
The 2026 draft class is headlined by an elite group of prospects, including AJ Dybansta (BYU), Cameron Boozer (Duke), Caleb Wilson (UNC Chapel Hill), and Darryn Peterson (Kansas), who are believed to be the next generation of NBA stars.
Most draft analysts have already projected AJ Dybansta, the standout freshman wing from Brigham Young University (BYU), as the leading candidate to be selected by Washington as the No. 1 pick.

The 2026 NBA Draft will be at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, with the first round set for Tuesday, June 23 and the second round set for Wednesday, June 24.
