Actor Will Smith Recalls Father’s Violence Against Mother

Will Smith admits in his upcoming memoir that his father was physically abusive toward his mother.

A GQ feature piece on the famed actor published online Monday including passages from the memoir “Will,” including the first time he watched his father punch his mother in the side of the head at age 9.

“He was one of the greatest blessings of my life, and also one of my greatest sources of pain,” Smith wrote in the book, according to GQ.

Smith, who said he froze in fear during the incident, wrote that he never discussed the violence with his father, who championed his son’s career until he died in 2016, according to the GQ feature.

“I just never would’ve been able to say this stuff about my father beating up my mother,” Smith told GQ. “I never would’ve been able to talk about that while he was alive.”
