Robert Smith, the billionaire who agreed to pay off the entire student debts of the Morehouse College Class of 2019, is reportedly being investigated by the FBI and IRS over his use of offshore tax havens.
Smith, 57, whose $5.2 billion worth makes him the richest Black man in America is founder of the private equity firm Vista Equity Partners. He has been under FBI and IRS scrutiny for four years, according to a Bloomberg report as well as other news outlets.
Although his agreement to pay off the student debt of Morehouse’s 2019 graduates was initially valued at about $10 million, Bloomberg reports that Smith’s total gift ended up being $34 million.
Smith, who used his MBA with a specialty in finance to transition to Goldman Sachs before launching San Francisco-based Vista Equity in 2000, has not been charged in the case, and it’s possible authorities will decide he has not broken any laws, as the proceeds in question were always headed for charity.
