Building Bridges Across the River, a Ward 8 nonprofit focused on improving quality of life for residents east of the Anacostia River, announced Monday that Rahsaan Bernard will step down as president and CEO after 10 years leading the organization.
Scott Kratz, currently executive vice president, will succeed Bernard as president and CEO, while Lynnita Jones has been promoted to executive vice president.
The leadership transition comes as Building Bridges celebrates 20 years of operating the Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus, a 16.5-acre community hub that has become a national model for cross-sector collaboration. The organization also runs seven urban farms in Southeast Washington, operates the Skyland Workforce Center and is developing the 11th Street Bridge Park, which would be the District’s first elevated park.
Under Building Bridges’ management, THEARC has expanded into what officials describe as a vital anchor for Southeast Washington, providing education, arts, recreation and social services. This year, the organization opened a new 33,000-square-foot building at THEARC that houses the Washington School for Girls, expanding learning opportunities for girls in Ward 8.
Building Bridges is working with the District Department of Transportation to select a general contractor for the 11th Street Bridge Park, designed to connect communities on both sides of the Anacostia River. Groundbreaking is expected in 2026.
“Rahsaan’s decade of service has been transformative,” said Chris Smith, founder and board chair of Building Bridges and chairman of WC Smith. “Under his leadership, Building Bridges has expanded its reach and impact across Southeast D.C. As we celebrate 20 years of serving Ward 8, we are equally excited for what’s ahead.”
Kratz, who conceived the 11th Street Bridge Park concept, brings more than 30 years of experience in cultural and community development.
“It is an incredible honor to step into this role as we mark 20 years of building bridges โ both literally and figuratively,” Kratz said. “This moment reflects the strength of our community partnerships, and I look forward to working alongside Lynnita and our talented team to continue creating spaces that honor and uplift the residents of Ward 8.”
Jones has worked in senior leadership roles at Building Bridges for eight years and currently manages THEARC’s theater program, facilities and human resources. She is known for her focus on equity, community empowerment and operational excellence.
Bernard expressed confidence in the organization’s future direction.
“Serving Building Bridges and the community of Ward 8 has been the honor of my professional life,” Bernard said. “I leave with deep confidence in Scott and Lynnita’s leadership, and in Building Bridges’ bright future.”
