Have we forgotten?
More to the point, has President Donald Trump forgotten that this country was built on immigration, with even his own family line traceable to a European nation?
The president’s single-minded ban on immigrants from any country is a slap at the Constitution and all for which this nation stands.
Martin Luther King Jr. said he wanted to see the day when all would sit at the table of brotherhood. When Barack Obama was elected and then reelected, there was hope that such racist views were now limited to a few remaining and residual gun-toting folks with their weapons prominently displayed in the rear window of their pickup trucks. But Trump’s policies and all those standing with him — which are many — reveal that much work still needs to be done. King’s table of brotherhood includes blacks, whites, Jews and, yes, even and most certainly Muslims.
Perhaps if Trump eventually sits down for an interview as promised with NNPA President/CEO Dr. Benjamin Chavis, a King disciple and leader of the Black Press, maybe he will have a chance to be reminded about the importance of immigrants and how all are simply pursuing the American dream. He did just that and has found success. He’s a billionaire businessman who has become our nation’s 45th president. Surely, he hasn’t forgotten that.
