An estimated 64 million Americans who received Social Security benefits last year are getting support from a group of lawmakers pressuring the Trump administration to rescind or clarify new guidance that states seniors must file a tax return to receive a coronavirus stimulus payment.
However, many seniors receiving Social Security benefits are not required to file tax returns.
The Democratic legislators, led by Sens. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire and Sherrod Brown of Ohio, take umbrage with IRS guidelines issued this week stating that people not required to file tax returns for 2018 or 2019 “will need to file a simple tax return to receive” to receive their check.
The agency had previously mentioned Social Security recipients, which caused confusion among some elderly Americans.
