Kweisi Mfume was sworn in Tuesday to represent Maryland’s 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House, rejoining the chamber after more than two decades to complete the late Elijah Cummings’ two-year term that ends in January.
Mfume, 71, a former NAACP president who had previously held the House seat from 1987 until 1996, said during a victory speech last week after winning the special election that one of his priorities would be battling the coronavirus, which has disproportionately affected the Black community.
Mfume is also on the June primary ballot as a Democratic nominee for a full term, a race that he is expected to easily win.
