Macy’s has been honored with the prestigious Muriel F. Siebert Leadership Award for the exceptional diversity of its board of directors.

The award, given by the Women’s Forum of New York, was accepted by Terry Lundgren, the department store chain’s chair and CEO, in Manhattan on Nov. 19 during an event to honor Macy’s and 27 other top companies with boards of directors comprised of more than 40 percent women.

“We are very proud of the strength of experience and knowledge that each of our directors brings to the board table,” Lundgren said. “Diversity at every level is a strength of Macy’s, and we are proud of the guidance we receive from these extraordinary individuals.”

Macy’s, which has 800 stores in 45 states, is considered to have one of the strongest and most diverse boards in corporate America. The chain has six female directors on its 14-member board, with four of the members of ethnic minorities that include black, Hispanic and Asian-American.

“Macy’s is a company that demonstrates that having directors with a range of experiences and perspectives leads to better decisions and governance for all of our stakeholders,” said Joyce Roché, chair of Macy’s board’s nominating and corporate governance committee. “Terry Lundgren has been a strong leader whose commitment and leadership have made Macy’s a model that inspires other companies.”
