Several Republican operatives with ties to President Donald Trump allegedly are helping Kanye West get his name on the November ballot for president.
At least four people working on West’s campaign to get votes in battleground states believe the more they actually prop up the rapper to make him appear like a viable option, the likelier people are to vote for him and draw votes away from presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden, The New York Times reported.
One of West’s electors, Chuck Wilton of Vermont, who will be a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, said in a New York Magazine interview that he was “not disappointed with [Trump] but wanted to search out some more alternatives to him,” and that West was “center right” just like himself.
West, 43, a vocal supporter of Trump, filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on July 15 and has also filed paperwork to appear on the ballot in Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, West Virginia and Wisconsin. He gave up attempting to get on the New Jersey ballot and has missed other state deadlines in Florida, Michigan and Texas.
