In its alleged โinfinite wisdom,โ the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) appears to have once again sided with those who are bound and determined to โmake America white again.โ
Thatโs the only logical conclusion we can muster as we assess the rationale behind the recent SCOTUS ruling that severely weakened Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
The decision makes it harder to challenge racially gerrymandered maps. Whatโs more, it will undoubtedly provide smooth sailing for states, while exercising their newly enhanced redistricting power, to create maps that dilute minority voting strength.
The decision comes at a critical time as the 2026 midterm election approaches, not to mention the general election two years from now.
With the GOP supported by a Supreme Court that has clearly lost its way and the reason it was even created, the clock continues to move in reverse.
So, what are some options? Advocacy groups say citizens must flood the phones, offices, and email inboxes of local House and Senate officials, calling for Congress to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to strengthen voting protections at the federal level.ย
The Black community is well beyond the point of standing by idly with hopes that things will get better. Itโs clear that they will not, unless we demand it.
African Americans built this country. African Americans died in service to their enslavers. African Americans have fought bravely in all 12 of Americaโs military contests, even dying in the defense of democracy abroad.
African Americans deserve a lot more.
But if the Black community and all people don’t stand up and get involved, African Americans are going to get even less.
So, in November, make sure you vote.
Vote like your life, your childrenโs lives, and the lives of those yet unborn, depend on it. Because, well, they do!
