Nearly 50 years ago, while working on numerous projects from my office located on upper Georgia Avenue, half a block from McGuire Funeral Home, my sisters and I were full-time entrepreneurs, and our office was on the second floor on Georgia Avenue NW in Ward 4. We had sorority projects, community service and other things going on. There was a lady on one of my committees, serving as a coordinator of an upcoming fashion show, who said to me one day, “You are too many things in one motion!” A quote I shall never forget. She wasn’t criticizing, in fact, it was her way of giving me a compliment for being able to keep up with several projects that were going on all at once.
The Holy Spirit was ordering my steps, and though much of what was being shown to me was quite difficult, I listened, stepped out on faith, and tried various things so the community would know we had opened our entrepreneurial doors. How else would anyone know the Grant sisters existed, unless we find a way to showcase our services? That’s why we worked so hard to make the annual Georgia Avenue Day a huge success. Never having coordinated a parade and festival for the city, it took bravery! Filled with fear, I kept right on moving.
“Too many things in one motion” may have been a compliment back then, when I was in my mid-30s, but now, at age 68, it is a different story! As I look back, I realize how good God made me in such a way as to be able to work on several major projects all at once, and keep journals on each, thus bringing them all to fruition.
It was truly God’s Grace! Let’s examine the words of my favorite song, sung by Rev. Luther Barnes: “How did I make it all these years? How did I make it this far? Through the valleys and over the hills, I know it had to be God. How did I make it through the storm? How did I make it through the rain? If you want to know, just how I got here, it’s so easy to explain. It was God’s grace (God’s grace). I made it this far.”
Please listen when the Holy Spirit orders your steps. My life is only a testimony. It is my desire to encourage you to go after your dreams. Do exactly what the Bible says. In the Book of James, it talks about how our days are numbered, that we are like a mist, here today and gone tomorrow. It says, “I will do anything you ask in my name.” The Scriptures tell us how life and death are in the power of the tongue and how to take delight in the Lord: “He will give you the desires of your heart.”
As Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
