The University of Maryland, College Park has put on hold all training activities after 46 student-athletes tested positive for the coronavirus.
A university news release said the infected students are on 10 different sports teams, WTOP reported. The cases are the most reported within Maryland athletics since the university started testing its students and student-athletes.
The university health center tested 501 student-athletes on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 and there will be retests on Sept. 8. The use of the athletic training facility and team activities is temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure as university officials wait for test results.
Maryland Athletics Director Damon Evans emphasized that the university will “continue to educate our student-athletes and staff about best practices and protocols to be safe this time.”
“We look forward to when our student-athletes can safely return to workouts and then restart their seasons,” Evans said, WTOP reported.
